How the 4C's affect the difference in prices for diamonds

Out of the 4C's (cut, colour, carat & clarity) the carat weight of a diamond affects the diamond price the most. Obviously a larger diamond is rarer thus more valuable. Carat size is also the most viable of the 4Cs. You don’t need any gemological education to see the difference between a one carat and .50ct. The size is also the most visible feature of a diamond.

Diamond colour can be seen by the naked eye, especially when diamonds are compared next to each other.  The higher grade, more colourless diamonds are more expensive than the yellower diamonds. Diamond clarity & cut are characteristics that can only be measured under a microscope and are the least viable.

Every diamond is unique which means that even if two diamonds have the same color, clarity, shape, and carat weight (the 4 Cs), you could still have up to a 10 - 40% difference in value due to proportions, finish, age of the certificate, fluorescence, etc.

To really underdand diamond prices you need to speak to professionals or get unbiased information from experts.

Below is a general diamond price guide of what size diamond you can expect to get for a range of prices. This is not an official diamond pricing index and you will find that depending on the quality of the diamond the prices may vary.

The pricing of diamonds is a very complex matter. The Rapaport Diamond Report, known in the trade as the Rap-sheet is the monthly wholesale diamond price list used by dealers worldwide to keep up with changing market prices. The number you find on the charts is only the starting point. That number needs to be adjusted by many factors, including every detail about the cut (proportions and symmetry and polish) as well as other quality factors like fluorescence. Price also varies hugely from the cutter to the store depending on the store's credit rating, how much they are buying from that source, whether this stone is being borrowed on memo to show you, or purchased for cash without a prospective buyer, etc.
